[Shameless plug, my new music blog: Music Sucks.] The year is coming to a close and it is time for the 1st annual top music picks of the last year. After much contemplation and changing about (it is likely that the minute I post this I will want to rearrange the ranking), this year's best album is Murray's Revenge by Murs and 9th Wonder. The List (2006): 1) Murs and 9th Wonder - Murray's Revenge (LISTEN) 2) Vetiver - To Find Me Gone (LISTEN) 3) The Flaming Lips - At War with the Mystics (LISTEN) 4) Margot and the Nuclear So and So's - The Dust of Retreat (LISTEN) 5) Belle and Sebastian - The Life Pursuit (LISTEN) 6) Beirut - Gulag Orkestar (LISTEN) 7) Modill - Midnight Green (LISTEN) 8) People Under the Stairs - Stepfather (LISTEN) 9) JDilla - Donuts (LISTEN) 10) Cat Power - The Greatest (LISTEN) Honorable Mentions (in no particular order): ...And You will Know Us by the Trail of Dead - So Divided (LISTEN) Beach House - Beach House (LISTEN) Regina Spektor - Begin to Hope (LISTEN) The Decemberists - The Crane Wife (LISTEN) Joanna Newson - ys (LISTEN) The Theater Fire - Everybody has a Dark Side (LISTEN) Britta Persson - Top Quality Bones and A Little Terrorist (LISTEN) Most Overlooked/Underrated Album: Modill - Midnight Green - I didn't see anything regarding reviews or etc for this album. It's really too bad these guys threw together a great set of tracks, definitely one of the best hip-hop albums of the year in my opinion. Most Overrated Album: The Decemberists - The Crane Wife - Talk of this album was everywhere and while it is a good album it's not the bands best and too many yuppies were touting it as such. Good but not good enough. Albums I Haven't Bought but Likely will before the Year is out (in no particular order): The Knife - Silent Shout (WATCH) Sunset Rubdown - Shut Up I Am Dreaming (LISTEN)
