Joe Williams home

Over the last few years I have been on a comeback of sorts. I've gone from racing in Belgium as a U-23 in 2005 at around 125lbs, to an overweight couch potato in 2011 and 2012 at 165lbs. Today, prep'ing for long distance mountain bike races I am comfortable maintaining my weight around 137lbs. Due to physiological and body composition changes due to being thirty instead of twenty two I'll likely never see 125lbs again. I'm okay with that. Through all this I have come up with a number of guidelines to help me loose and maintain my weight. I say "guidelines" because it's not really a "diet" in the normal sense, more like rules that have kept me out of trouble. While I'm not an expert I feel like the guidelines are generic enough that they might work for others and thus the cause of this post. Additionally, I should preface this with the fact that I train a lot (around 6,000 miles in 2012 and 10,000 miles in 2013) which certainly contributed largely to my weight loss but that should not detract from the message.

The following tips are in order of importance based on anecdata and my own experiences.
